Dreaming of a kiss : what can this symbol evoke?

What seals rather than what seduces

Before being amorous, the kiss was a seal : one sealed a pact, greeted a king, acknowledged a brother. The word itself long denoted a public act of recognition, not an intimate gesture. And one of the most famous kisses in Western culture is a betrayal.

That ambivalence stays alive in dreams. A kiss there rarely means desire alone : it means a bond is acknowledged, sealed, or on the contrary used against the one receiving it. The question is therefore not "do I love this person?" but : which bond does this gesture certify?

This is why dreaming of kissing someone one does not love, or not of one's usual sex, disturbs many dreamers without sufficient reason. The dream uses the kiss as a sign of recognition, not as a confession.

The prevented kiss

The most reported scene is not the kiss but its failure : one approaches and something intervenes, the face turns away, the mouth is not where it should be, the dream moves elsewhere at the precise moment of contact.

That avoidance is itself the subject. The kiss abolishes the last distance, and that is exactly what something in you refuses — not from lack of desire, often from fear of what would follow. An admission that would commit, a closeness that would oblige, a recognition one prefers not to give.

What to remember is the source of the prevention. External — a third party, an obstacle, an interruption — it designates a situation. Internal — one turns away oneself — it designates something else, and the dream then rarely insists.

Who kisses whom changes the reading

• Kissing someone one does not love — a bond acknowledged rather than a desire : the gesture certifies, it does not confess.
• A kiss on the forehead — the recognition of a place rather than a desire : protection, filiation, farewell.
• A kiss refused or turned aside — what something in you will not seal, often from fear of what follows.
• Kissing a dead person — the resumption of a bond death did not suffice to close.
• A kiss given before witnesses — the commitment made public, with what that removes of reversibility.
• Receiving a kiss without returning it — a recognition coming from another, to which you have not yet replied.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology recalls that figures met in dreams often designate parts of the dreamer rather than real people : kissing someone can mean accepting in oneself what that person represents. This explains the frequent disturbance before such dreams, and dispels it. Other readings stress the dimension of the seal, recalling that every kiss commits the giver as much as the receiver.
