Dreaming of an alloy : what can this symbol evoke?

What is born of fusion

Bronze is neither copper nor tin : it is a third metal, more resistant than its components, and which neither of them foretold. It takes a heat that undoes both of them.

The alchemists made that operation the model of all true transformation, and Jung took up their language : the coniunctio does not reconcile two opposites by softening them, it melts them to draw out a third thing. What comes of it is neither one nor the other, and can no longer be separated.

The alloy in dreams often designates what, in you, resulted from an ordeal in which two demands clashed until they melted : a firmness born of a long wounded gentleness, a caution issued from excess trust, a strength still bearing the mark of what produced it.

The impure metal

The symbol's other side is less flattering : an alloy can be a falsification. Adulterated gold, the coin that rings wrong, the metal with the look but not the worth. A whole monetary and moral tradition was built on that suspicion.

This form appears in dreams when something is suspected of not being pure : a feeling mixed with interest, a generosity that expects something, a calling that accommodates a comfort. The dreamer often wakes with a doubt about their own sincerity.

One must then recall the first reading, which answers the second : in metallurgy the alloy is not a degradation, it is what makes the metal usable. Pure gold is too soft to make a ring. The question becomes : are you demanding of your motives a purity no life allows?

What the metal shows changes the reading

• A new metal, sturdier than its components — a strength born of an inner conflict that found its outcome.
• An alloy that breaks — a badly made union : the parts did not fuse, they were merely juxtaposed.
• Discovering an object is not pure gold — a suspicion cast on the sincerity of a feeling, yours or another's.
• Watching two metals melt together — a process under way, still hot, which it would be premature to judge.
• Wanting to separate an alloy — the wish to return to an earlier state the fusion has made unreachable.
• A dull metal proving resistant — what has little shine and much hold, often underestimated in oneself.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Jung saw in alchemical operations a projected description of the psyche's transformations, and in the fusion of metals the image of a union that does not come undone. Other readings stress the question of purity and its cost : demanding unmixed motives of oneself often leads to inaction or to lying.
